HPD to Join START Program

The Hannibal Police Department is excited to announce a new program which our School Resource Officer’s will be brining to our local schools. Starting this school year the Hannibal Police Department will be participating in the START program which was created by the St. Charles County (MO) Police Department in cooperation with other local entities. START stands for Substance, Tobacco, Alcohol, Resistance Training. This will be a program taught by our school resource officers to all of our sixth grade students in both private and public schools. START was developed by the St. Charles County Police in 2016 and is now taught in every school district in St. Charles County. The Hannibal Police Department is excited join six other agencies, bringing the START program to our students. Our school resource officers are attending the training to teach the program and are excited to bring the new program back to our community. We have been teaching DARE for many years in our school and are proud of exposure that program has allowed. We felt that the START program was flexible, and adaptable to our local needs, while also staying up to date with emerging social issues. The START program will cover not only drug and alcohol prevention, but also bullying and digital citizenship. In our current society we need an adaptable program which can conform to emerging issues. I feel that the START program will fit the needs of our community, and be adaptable to new trends as they arise. Beyond the curriculum the program will allow students to interact with our school resource officers in a positive manner. The new school year is approaching quickly and we look forward to bringing the START program to our students.
