What is the Police Cadet Program?

The Police Cadet Program allows those who are not academy trained, licensed police officers to be sent to the police academy with the tuition and lodging paid for- at no cost to the police cadet-plus receive a salary and benefits as specified contractually**. (Program covers tuition, lodging and costs associated with academy instruction. Meals are not included.) After successfully graduating from the police academy, cadets then advance to the position of police officer.

** The contractual agreement requires the Hannibal Police Department be reimbursed for training related costs in the event employment is voluntarily or involuntarily terminated for good cause prior to the expiration of a three year period from the date of hire.


Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED

Age Limit: Must be 21 but less than 36 years of age by date of hire.

Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.

Background: Applicants will not be hired if they have felony convictions as an adult or if they have plead guilty to a felony as an adult.  Misdemeanor convictions may also preclude employment.

Valid Driver’s License/Driving Record: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record during the last three years that is acceptable to our insurance provider.

The testing procedures may include one or more of the following examinations/tests:

  • Written Test
  • Physical Ability (Backyard Pursuit)
  • Oral Interview
  • Intensive Background Investigation
  • Personality Profile
  • Drug Screening
  • Medical Screening

Annual Salary & Benefits for Cadet

Starting Pay: $36,087 (Base pay + Holiday pay)

Overtime is paid at time and a half.

Once a Missouri Peace Officer License is earned, salary increases to $49,105 (Base Pay + Holiday Pay).

What will I do as a Police Cadet?

Academy Training will be scheduled for the next available class. Until then, cadets begin their training by:

  • Performing In-Service Training:
    • Firearms (duty weapon, rifle, shotgun, less-lethal (beanbag)
    • OC Spray and Baton Tactics
    • Taser
    • First Aid
    • Self-defense/Subject Control Tactics
  • Learning HPD Policies/Procedures
  • Learning the City Ordinances
  • Learning the City Streets
  • Familiarization with the department computer database and records systems
  • Ride-Along with a Patrol Officer
  • And More!
