The Hannibal Police Department would like to inform the public of two recent incidents in which domestic animals were injured due to spring loaded leg traps. The first incident, involving a cat, occurred in the 100 block of N. Hayden and the next, involving a dog, occurred in the 100 block of Collins. Both animals suffered injuries resulting in their limbs being amputated. These types of leg traps are illegal inside the city limits and not only pose a danger to domestic animals, but can also be dangerous to adults and especially small children. Per Section 4-12 of the City Ordinances, no animal traps can be used inside the city limits, with the exception of Animal Control Officers, without the permission of the chief of police. Anyone found using unauthorized traps within the city limits will be cited for such.
