****UPDATE****

On Wednesday, December 14th, the 10th Judicial District Court of Marion County issued a warrant for Brendon J. Garrelts, 23 of Hannibal, charging him with Second Degree Assault and Armed Criminal Action. The charges stem from an incident that began on Tuesday, December 13th at approximately 12:37pm. Officers with the Hannibal Police Department were called to the 1600 block of Booker for a person who had sustained a gunshot wound. Detectives were able to determine a fight had ensured between several individuals including Garrelts. During the altercation Garrelts fired a handgun which struck a sixty-year-old male. Garrelts fled the scene and was apprehended a short time later. He was still in possession of the firearm. The victim was transported to Hannibal Regional Hospital then transferred to another hospital. Garrelts was taken to Hannibal Regional Hospital for treatment then taken to the Marion County Jail. His bond was set at $25,000.00 cash or surety and he remains in the Marion County Jail. Due to the proximity of the incident and of Stowell Elementary School, the school was immediately placed on lock down and an officer was stationed at the school until it was determined there was no longer a threat in the area.

On Tuesday, December 13th, at approximately 12:37pm officers with the Hannibal Police Department were called to the 1600 block of Booker for a person who had sustained a gunshot wound. Within seven minutes of the call officers located the alleged suspect and took them into custody without incident and recovered the firearm. The victim was transported by ambulance to Hannibal Regional Hospital. The investigation is still  active and more will be released when deemed necessary.

 

A criminal charge is merely an allegation and the defendant is, of course, presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
