On Thursday, September 18th, the 10th Judicial Circuit Court of Marion County issued warrants for Gary Sasso, 43 of Springfield Illinois, charging him with Assault 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action. The charges stem from an incident that was reported to the Hannibal Police Department on Wednesday, September 17th. Officers responded to a report of an assault at South Main and Washington St. The victim reported hearing a disturbance between a male and a female. Sasso was identified as the male involved in the disturbance. A subject confronted Sasso, and he shot the subject multiple times with a pellet gun causing minor injuries. Sasso then shot another person who was present with the pellet gun causing injury. Sasso attempted to evade officers by walking into the Mississippi River however he was apprehended a short time later. Both victims refused medical treatment. Sasso’s bond was set at $20,000.00 cash only. He remains in the Marion County Jail.
A criminal charge is merely an allegation and the defendant is, of course, presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
