On September 7th, Officers of the Hannibal Police Department were called to the Hannibal Regional Hospital to assist the Division of Family Services regarding a one year old infant who had been severely burned. During the course of the investigation it was discovered that the child had been in the care of 20 year old Marvin L. Abbey, of Hannibal, who had attempted to give the child a bath. During which, the child was scalded by hot water and suffered 2nd degree burns on the face and a large portion of her body. Abbey was arrested and placed on a 24 hour hold at the Marion County Jail on charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and an outstanding Illinois warrant for Possession of Marijuana. The child was later transferred to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital where her condition was determined as critical but stable.
On September 11, 2012 a warrant was issued on Abbey reference the burned child, by the 10th Judicial Circuit Court charging him with the Class C felony of Assault 2nd degree.Bond was set at $100,000 and Abbey remains in the Marion County Jail at this time.
