On Sunday afternoon, an Officer of the Hannibal Police Department was dispatched near the intersection of Hwy 61 and Stardust for a report of a white male walking in and out of traffic. When the officer arrived on scene he witnessed the subject, 20 year old Austin A. Hatton of Hannibal, stagger into oncoming traffic. Believing he was a danger to himself, the officer attempted to get Hatton away from the roadway. Hatton became combative and attempted to pull away from the officer and walk into traffic. During the altercation, both Hatton and the officer fell to the ground. The officer gained control of Hatton and he was placed under arrest and searched. During the search the officer located 2 cans of electronic aerosol dusting spray, commonly used for inducing a high by “huffing” the aerosol. Hatton was charged with Resisting / Interfering Arrest and Possession of a Mind Altering Substance and placed on a 24 hour old at the Marion County Jail. Both Hatton and the officer received minor injuries during the altercation. The officer was treated at the Hannibal Regional Hospital and released. Hatton refused treatment.
