On Saturday, September 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. the Hannibal police Department will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Kroger Pharmacy at 204 Huck Finn Shopping Center. This service is free and anonymous. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health concern. Medicines that languish in home medicine cabinets are susceptible to misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and over doses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including home medicine cabinets. In addition the usual method for disposing of unused medicines, by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, pose potential safety and health hazards. The Hannibal Police Department would appreciate your participation in this program.
