On Friday, April 6, 2012 at 0902 the Hannibal Police Department responded to the intersection of Highway 61 and Warren Barret Drive for a report of a semi tractor rollover accident with unknown injuries. Upon Officer’s arrival it was found that a 2007 Western Star semi tractor trailer driven by David Brooks, 52 YOA of Canton, Missouri was northbound on Highway 61. As he approached the intersection of Warrant Barret and Highway 61 a pick-up truck stopped at the electrical signal in front of Brooks. Brooks advised he swerved onto Warrant Barret to avoid rear ending the other vehicle at which time the load of coal in the dump trailer shifted and broke free from the tractor and overturned.
Gloria Smith, 38 YOA of Hannibal, Missouri was westbound on Warren Barret Drive in a 2011 Ford van approaching the electrical signal when coal from the spilt load struck the left side of the vehicle. Richella Pipkin, 42 YOA of Hannibal, Missouri was also westbound on Warren Barre Drive in a 2004 Chevy Tahoe. Pipkins vehicle was struck on the left front driver’s side by coal debris, the Tahoe was behind the van. The trailer had to be towed from the scene along with the van due to damages, no injuries were reported. Brooks was cited for following too close reference accident. The Hannibal Police Department was assisted by Missouri State Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Hannibal Fire Department, Marion County Ambulance. The Hannibal Street Department assisted in clean up of the spilt load of coal which covered both westbound lanes, Warrant Barret Drive was closed for approximately two hours.
