The Hannibal Police Department would like to inform the public of two recent incidents in which domestic animals were injured due to spring loaded leg traps. The first incident occurred near Bowling Ave and the next occurred in the 900 block of Paris. In 2013 the Hannibal Police Department responded to two incidents involving spring loaded traps in which domestic animals suffered injuries resulting in their limbs being amputated. These types of leg traps are illegal inside the city limits and not only pose a danger to domestic animals, but can also be dangerous to adults and especially small children. Per Section 4-12 of the City Ordinances, no animal traps can be used inside the city limits, with the exception of Animal Control Officers, without the permission of the Chief of Police. Anyone found using unauthorized traps within the city limits will be cited for such.
