HPD Begins New Youth Work Program “PAY$”

The Hannibal Police Department will be offering a new youth program this Summer aimed at children ages 11-14 called “PAY$”.  The “PAY$” program stands for “Positive Alternatives Youth Services”. Children participating in the program will be provided the opportunity to perform tasks for the following: Hannibal Public School District, Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department, Hannibal Street Department and Northeast Missouri Humane Society.  After performing the assigned tasks the children will be rewarded with a variety of incentives. Everything from Community Pool passes, food vouchers at local restaurants, movie passes, cash and a $100 shopping spree at a local retailer will be offered for the children completing each task successfully. Children involved in “PAY$” will be assigned starting July 9th a two hour work period every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for five weeks ending August 8th.  Working in concert with the Hannibal School District approximately 30 children will be recommend by Hannibal Middle School counselors they believe will benefit from the program. The Hannibal Police Department School Resource Officers (SRO) are in charge of supervising the program. The SRO will interview and select ten children to participate in the program for this year. Ultimately the core goals of the program is to develop the children’s civic awareness (Develop their sense of being part of the community), develop their work ethic, develop a more responsible attitude and create a more positive attitude and perception of  law enforcement personnel.
